Veterans Alliance of The Rio Grande Valley

Recognizing the need to formulate strategy for the upcoming Texas Legislature, the Veterans Alliance of the Rio Grande Valley has been meeting with local legislators. On Monday February 22, 2010 the Veterans Alliance will meet with the valley’s legislators to the Texas House of Representatives. The meeting is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Weslaco City Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the recently passed Propostion 8 legislation and what needs to be done to put it to work to get us our VA hospital for the Valley. Also, all legislators will be asked to support efforts to reach Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki to convince him to have the VA construct and maintain a VA hospital for the Valley.
All State Representatives have been invited. They are Rep. Rene Olivieria, (Dist 37), Eddie Lucio, 111, (Dist 38), Armando Mando Martinez (Dist 39), Aaron Pena, Jr. (Dist 40), Veronica Gonzalez (Dist 41), Tara Rios Ybarra (Dist 43). and Ryan Guillen (Dist ). Rep. Ismael Kino Flores has also being invited but it is not known if he is going to participate.
A courtesy invitation has also been sent to Senators John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Representatives from both offices will attend.
The Valley’s two Texas state senators, Sen. Juan Jesus Hinojosa and Eddie Lucio, Jr. have already met with the Veterans Alliance. They have agreed to push for the valley hospital. At the meeting, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst was also present and concurred with the two senators.
The Lt. Governor is the most powerful member of the legislative process. He controls the agenda and the legislation that he feels should be moved. In essence, he controls the outcome of legislation submitted by members to the Texas Legislature.
