Dr. Robert Gates to speak on leadership & Boy Scouts

HARLINGEN, Texas — Former Secretary of Defense and former CIA Director Dr. Robert Gates will briefly speak to the Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets Thursday, Oct. 12 at 9:30 a.m. in Yeckel auditorium on the MMA campus.

Gates, 35th President of the Boy Scouts of America (May 2014-May 2016), will speak to the MMA cadets about the qualities of good leaders and the leadership development the Boy Scouts program can offer. Gates is presently in the Rio Grande Valley supporting the “¡Adelante Con Camp Perry!” campaign. He is a 1958 Eagle Scout from the Quivira Council in Wichita, Kan.

Gates is known for serving as 22nd United States Secretary of Defense (December 2006-July 2011). Prior to this position, he was 22nd President of Texas A&M University (August 2002-December 2006). Before joining the Texas A&M administration in 1999, Gates worked as an intelligence professional for nearly 27 years and served as 15th Director of Central Intelligence (November 1991 – January 1993).

He is presently the 24th Chancellor of the College of William and Mary (since February 2012).

Gates earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of William and Mary in 1965; a master’s degree in history from Indiana University in 1966; and a doctorate degree in Russian and Soviet history from Georgetown University in 1974. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant from 1967-1969.
