Border Patrol agents help deliver baby

SULLIVAN CITY, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station helped a woman give birth Tuesday night.

The woman, who is a national of El Salvador, was apprehended by Border Patrol agents near the Rio Grande. Shortly after being apprehended, the woman went into labor.  Agents immediately provided basic medical assistance and requested an ambulance. However, the woman was too far into labor and before the ambulance could arrive, the woman gave birth to a baby girl with the help of the agents.

The woman and her baby were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

“While delivering babies is not something Border Patrol agents typically do, they are highly trained in first-aid techniques and have a duty to help individuals in need, regardless of citizenship,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Raul Ortiz. “A mother and her child are safe now, thanks to the quick-thinking and appropriate actions taken by these agents.”
