On January 18, 2014 at approximately 6:18p.m, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were called to a warehouse located at 323 East Owassa Rd, southeast of Edinburg.

Upon arrival Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Deputies discovered a cockfighting operation.  The operators of the cockfighting operation advised the deputies that the cockfighting was being held for medical research purposes.

Deputies encountered approximately 100 spectators.  Because of the large number of spectators, only 54 were held while the others fled.  Deputies seized the usual equipment used in illegal cockfights along with 21 game cock carcasses and 78 line game cocks that were transported to an animal shelter.

The 54 spectators were issued Class C misdemeanor citations.

A follow up investigation has been initiated and warrants for the cockfights, a state jail felony will be used for the organizers.

There is no evidence to support any type of medical research.
