IDEA Public Schools Hosts College Signing Day

7th Consecutive Year of 100 Percent of Students Going to College

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TX (May 27, 2013) – IDEA Public Schools hosted College Signing Day on May 22 and 23 to honor and celebrate more than 400 graduating seniors and learn where each senior will be attending college next year.

An excited crowd of 4,000 families, teachers, students and friends filled the State Farm Arena each day as IDEA Public Schools’ Class of 2013 revealed their college choices, celebrated their achievements and reaffirmed their commitment to graduate from college. College Signing Day is one of IDEA’s most important and inspiring traditions.

“College Signing Day is an incredible opportunity to reflect on how far our seniors have come and where they are going,” said JoAnn Gama, Co-Founder and Chief of Schools at IDEA Public Schools. “A college degree can change a person’s life trajectory and it’s important to celebrate and recognize the importance of this step on their journey to and through college.”

The IDEA Public Schools’ Class of 2013 received more than 2000 college acceptances to 233 colleges in 35 states across the nation. The graduating seniors’ accomplishments have been rewarded with more than $15,200,000 in scholarships. Three seniors have been named Gates Millennium Scholars and four have been named Dell Scholars. More than 75 percent of the graduating seniors will be the first person in their family to graduate from college.

Each of the seniors from six IDEA high schools across the Rio GrandeValley revealed their college choice and signed a College Success Agreement outlining their commitment to graduate from college. The graduating classes of IDEA College Prep Donna, IDEAFrontierCollege Prep, IDEAQuestCollege Prep, IDEACollege Prep Mission, IDEACollege Prep San Benito and IDEACollege Prep San Juan participated in College Signing Day. These are the first graduating classes from IDEACollege Prep Mission, IDEACollege Prep San Benito and IDEACollege Prep San Juan.

“I am so proud of our graduating seniors,” said Tom Torkelson, Founder and CEO of IDEA Public Schools. “They are truly living up to their potential and are defying the odds in the process. With the support of their parents, families and teachers, they are well on their way to becoming leaders in our cities, our state and our nation.”
