EDINBURG,Texas— The Edinburg Roadrunners have clinched home field advantage throughout the 2012 playoffs after defeating the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 6-5 Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Tied at five in the bottom of the ninth, Joe Weik came around to score the winning run after Bryan Marquez misplayed a double by Derek Perren. Edinburgleads RGV by five and a half games with five games left to play.
The WhiteWings (50-40) jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first after Romulo Ruiz hit a two-run single that allowed Roberto Rodriguez and Leugim Barroso to score giving them the 2-0 lead.
RGV added a run in the top of the sixth. Ruiz hit a leadoff double and then came in to score on an RBI ground out by Mario Mercedes that extended the lead 3-0.
The Roadrunners (56-35) rallied in the bottom of the sixth against Luis Noel, who got a no-decision. They sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits knocking Noel out of the game. Weik, Stantrel Smith, and Luis Sumoza each had RBI singles in the inning.
In the top of the eighth, RGV cut the lead down to one with a sacrifice fly by Welinson Baez that scored Ruiz from third making it 5-4Edinburg.
Bryan Marquez, who reached on an error, came in to score in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Barroso that tied the game at five setting up the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth for the Roadrunners.
Robert Roth (1-0) picked up his first win after allowing one run in an inning of work and striking out one.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will continue their series Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Matison Smith (7-6) is expected to start forEdinburgwith the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
