Breaking News: Body of Andres Frias Recovered

The body of 18-year old Andres Frias was recovered shortly before 2 am today, according to McAllen Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Wendy Smith.

The recovery effort, led by the McAllen Fire Department, took the cooperation of more 100 people from several agencies.  The coordinated effort required diking a canal, south of McAllen, where Frias drowned.  After the canal was diked, crews were able to pump water from an underground water line where Frias’ body was submerged.

Draining of the canal began around 11:30 pm Saturday and Frias’ body was recovered a few hours later.

Assisting in the effort were staff from the City of McAllen, the city of Hidalgo police department, the City of Pharr, the City of Mission, the City of Edinburg, the City of Brownsville, the City of Weslaco, Hidalgo County Emergency Management, Hidalgo County Constables, all Hidalgo County Precinct offices, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department, Hidalgo County Fire Marshal, Linn-San Manuel Volunteer Fire Department, the Red Cross, the Region 11 Emergency Medical Task Force, and the Texas Department of Transportation.

“We are extremely grateful to all of the agencies who committed their manpower and resources to this recovery operation and who worked tirelessly to help bring closure to the Frias family,” said Smith.  “We couldn’t have done this without their help.”
