“…and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts:...” (Revelation 2:23).
One of the main truths that is taught in Scripture is the fact that Jesus is Jehovah God of the Old Testament, as we have so many times seen before. This phrase here offers further confirmation of Christ’s deity because this is said of the God of the Old Testament.
1Chronicles 28:9 says, “And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts…” Also, Psalm 7:9 says, “…for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.”
When Jesus says that all churches shall know that He is the one which searches the reigns and hearts, Jesus is declaring that He is Jehovah God. And so today, true Christian churches confess the deity of Jesus Christ. Should a church, or anyone for that matter, not believe that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament, that church or group, regardless if they call themselves Christians, are a cult.
The second meaning of verse 23 is that nothing can be hidden from Him. If there is a church that is involved in false doctrine, or involved in sin and spiritual adultery, He knows about it. Nothing is hid from His sight.
Jesus then says in verse 23c “…and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.” That is, God will judge everyone accordingly. Nobody will be able to say that His judgment was unfair. His judgment will be righteous. He will judge everyone according to what they did while they were alive on earth.
Unfortunately people live a life in sin and do everything that their hearts desire, but come to ignore all the warnings of the coming consequences that their sin will bring when they stand before God in the White Throne Judgment. But regardless how much they ignore the fact that God is tugging in their hearts to stop sinning against Him, they will not escape.
The Bible teaches that everyone who refuses to repent of their sin, and refuses to believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior (John 3:36), will have to pay for their own sins. Paul writes this truth in Romans 2:1-11. In Romans 2:5-6 he says, “But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God. Who will render to every man according to his deeds:”
“Impenitent” means unrepentant. Because of that, the more that people sin, the more that they will be judged for. They are treasuring the wrath of God like one treasures up money at the bank. The more money one has is the more money they will spend. On the same token, the more an unbeliever sins, is the more wrath that he will receive on the Great Day of the White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15).
People do have a right to live the way they want to live. If they want to live in sin, they have a right to live in sin. People have a right to do what they want to do. But the day will come in which they will be judged for everything that they have done. They will not escape. And that is because they despised the goodness and forbearance of God that leads people to repentance. Unbelievers will be judged and condemned according to their works.
Paul also wrote in Romans 2:8-9, “But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the gentiles;”
Indignation and wrath are terms that describe the degree of the wrath of God. Indignation means fierce wrath with the purpose of revenge. And wrath means anger as a state of mind. Tribulation is “thilipsis” which means “to crush, press, compress, squeeze. It means grevious affliction or distress.” And anguish means “a narrow place,” which also carries the idea of suffering by compression. In other words, hell is going to be an aweful place of torment.
Should you not be a born again Christian, you are placing yourself in an eternal path that you will later regret. Receive Jesus Christ today.
