EDINBURG, Texas— Demetrius Banks pitched a complete game shutout for the McAllen Thunder as they defeated the Edinburg Roadrunners 10-0 Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Banks (3-2) allowed just two hits in the fourth inning before retiring the final 18 batters in a row for McAllen.
The Thunder (13-25) jumped out in front in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Miguel Alfonzo delivered a two-run double that allowed Roberto Rodriguez and Craig Hertler to score. Brian Nichols then followed with an RBI ground out that allowed Yasser Gomez to score from third. A wild pitch then allowed Alfonzo to score making it 4-0 McAllen.
In the top of the fourth, Gomez hit an RBI single that allowed Rodriguez to score pushing the Thunder lead 5-0.
Alfonzo hit a bases clearing three-run double in the top of the sixth extending the McAllen lead 8-0.
Matison Smith (4-3) took the loss for Edinburg (25-15) as he pitched five and two-third innings and allowed eight runs on six hits.
The Thunder added two more runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run by Nichols, his third of the season, which made it 10-0.
Banks completed the shutout with a scoreless ninth giving McAllen the 10-0 victory.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will continue their eight-game series Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Ryan Smith (3-2) is expected to face Alexei Perez (1-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
