“…To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God” (Revelation 2:7).
For the Christian, living in Ephesus in the first century was perhaps very difficult at times because of the very pagan, liberal, money hungry, idolatrous, wicked, and immoral city that surrounded them.
As previously mentioned, to be an overcomer, even in the Ephesus that surrounds you today, you must first flee four things. You need to flee fornication (1 Corinthians 6:18-20). You then need to flee the worship of idols (1 Corinthians 19:14). The third thing that you need to flee is the love of money (1 Timothy 6:9-11). And the fourth thing that you need to flee is lust (2 Timothy 2:22).
The second thing that you need to know and do in order to be an overcomer is that you need to cast off one thing and put on two. What you need to cast off are the works of darkness and everything else that is associated with that lifestyle. And what you need to put on is the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul wrote, “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof” (Romans 13:11-14).
The third thing that you need to know and do is walk. First, you need to walk in the Spirit. The bible says, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would” (Galatians 5:16-17).
The second walk you must do is, you need to walk in the calling that ye were called. Paul wrote, “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3).
The third type of walk that you must walk in is, you need to walk in love. “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” (Ephesians 5:2).
The fourth walk you must practice is, you need to walk as children of light.
“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:” (Ephesians 5:8).
The fourth and final thing that you need to know and do in order to be an overcomer is fight spiritually. Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 6:12 “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
If you know and do these things, you will be an overcomer. And to you are given the promises of Revelation.
The first promise is that you will eat in God’s Paradise (Revelation 2:7). The Second promise is that death will not touch you (Revelation 2:11). The third is that you will receive a new name (Revelation 2:17). The fourth is that you will have power over nations (Revelation 2:26). The fifth promise is that you will be clothed in white (Revelation 3:5). The sixth promise contains five wonderful things in itself (Revelation 3:12). The seventh is that you will sit with Him at His throne (Revelation 3:21). And the last promise given to those that overcome is that they will get an eternal inheritance (Revelation 21:7).
Therefore don’t give up. I know that sometimes the battle gets tough. But please know that “…greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Whenever you feeling the heat of the battle, just call on Jesus and He will deliver you.
