Prior to the LZRGV events tomorrow at the McAllen Convention Center, there will be events at the War Memorial from 8 am to noon, including the dedication of 2,100 names of Vietnam veterans Killed In Action. State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa will lead the dedication of names at 11:30 am.
The Veterans War Memorial of Texas (29th & Galveston in McAllen) invites the public to attend a Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Day ceremony on Sat. April 9, 2011. Public tours of the memorial complex will begin at 8 A.M.
At 10 A.M. A unique “public expressions” ceremony will begin. Any individual or group may express their feelings or memories regarding Vietnam through songs, speech, poetry, dance or other. Please contact Col. Frank Plummer at 956-631-2511 for scheduling.
At 10:50 the Donna ROTC under the command of Sgt. Major Castro will perform, followed by Edinburg singer Stephen Lopez. Also performing will be Judge Ruben Ramos & Rick Estrada of the Border Patrol playing trumpet solos. At 11:30 A.M. Vietnam veteran State Senator “Chuy” Hinojosa, along with VWM executive committee member Irma Agueros, will lead in the dedication of 2,100 names of the 3,400 Vietnam veterans from Texas killed in the Vietnam War. Purple Heart Commander, Tony Cordova will accept the names on behalf of the Memorial. At 12 noon Dr. Richard Soto will be leading the South Texas Indian dancers in their song, dance, and drum ceremony to praise and salute the veterans.
Any veterans groups or organizations are also invited to fly their insignia flags at the Memorial site to honor these groups.
Following this ceremony at the Memorial site will be the LZ RGV Welcome Home Vietnam veterans event at the McAllen Convention Center.
