Congressman Rubén Hinojosa will participate in the Congressional Roundtable on Hispanic Literacy event at the Sixth Annual Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA) at 9:50 a.m. at the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Ballroom on Monday, March 28, 2011
UTPA President, Dr. Robert Nelsen will present the Border Heroes Award to Congressman Hinojosa immediately following the Congressional Roundtable discussion at 11:25 a.m. The FESTIBA Border Heroes; Portraits of Bridging Cultures in America commemorates mean and women who bridged cultural understanding between two countries and two peoples. Other honorees include, Américo Paredes, Virgilio Elizondo, Ramiro Casso, Emma Tenayuca, Ruben C. Ortega, Jovita Gonzalez, Gloria Anzaldua, Armando Marroquin, Jesus “Chuy” Guerra, and Congressman Hinojosa.
“I am truly honored to have been chosen as a recipient of the FESTIBA Border Heroes award,” said Rep. Hinojosa. “However, I want to say that everyone who works so hard on increasing and expanding the education of our students here in South Texas are all heroes. The dedication of those involved comes not only from the knowledge of what an education can give to our children, it comes from the soul of those who have achieved success and want to give back.”
FESTIBA seeks to reduce the deficient literacy rates of Hispanics at the regional and national level. It strives to enhance literacy in South Texas and to lower the drop-out rate among Hispanics.
****As part of the literacy event, Congressman Hinojosa and UTPA President Nelsen will both read to the students of Sorenson Elementary School, 715 S. Standard Street, San Juan at 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 28, 2011 following the FESTIBA morning events.
