“When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law 75 years ago, he had a vision of a program that would protect everyday Americans from falling into poverty during their retirement years.
It was a bold promise from a Democratic President in 1935. Those were the days after the Great Depression in which more people, than in any other time in our nation’s history, were struggling to put food on the table. At that time, our country was just making an economic come back. However senior citizens were still finding it very hard to make ends meet during what was supposed to be their Golden Years. Democrats today understand the promise President Roosevelt made. They know Americans work their entire lives to earn Social Security and they fully deserve the returns for what they have spent a lifetime investing into.
Right now are working our way back from an economic disaster that rivals the Great Depression. This economic crisis threatened Social Security to the point of bankruptcy, which would have put our senior citizens at risk. But this Democratic Congress has fought hard to keep the Social Security Program running as it should. It is an effort that will protect generations of Americans to come.
We must remember that Social Security is not the cause of our budget deficits and that it has remained strong through 13 recessions and that it will prevail through these difficult economic times as well. We Democrats remain committed to assuring Americans that they will have a stable retirement for which they have earned. Social Security was born 75 years ago and it is still going strong”.
If Congress and the Presidents had not stolen the money from Social Security and replaced it with IOU’s from the government it would have been a great program.
