McALLEN, Texas – With the sentencing of five people today, 12 people have been now been convicted and sentenced for their respective roles in making false statements on Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) forms 4473 in the acquisition of firearms from federal firearms licensees (FFL) and exporting those firearms to Mexico, United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced today. Marco Antonio Gonzalez Jr., 24, of McAllen, Texas; Jorge Alberto Cruz-Lopez Jr., 20, a United States citizen living in Reynosa, Mexico; Ruben Barraza, 18, of Pharr, Texas; Jeremy Dick, 23, of San Benito, Texas; and Fabian Lopez, 22, of Edinburg, Texas, were all sentenced today. All previously pleaded guilty to the charges.

Laredo, TX—Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX) joined U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in notifying residents of the Rio Grande Valley that CBP will soon begin testing and evaluating whether surplus Department of Defense (DoD) equipment can be re-purposed for CBP border security efforts in the United States. Beginning this week, CBP will be evaluating “aerostats”—large, balloon-like devices—by launching them in the airspace above the Rio Grande Valley area.

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) today commissioned the Tactical Marine Unit’s fifth new patrol vessel at a ceremony in Austin. The boat is named in honor of the late Trooper Russell Boyd, who was shot and killed at the age of 25 in Waller County on October 11, 1983. Trooper Boyd was shot after pulling a suspect over for speeding on S.H. 6 north of Hempstead, Texas. The suspect, who had already killed two people before shooting the trooper, killed a total of six people before he was captured.
