CUELLAR: TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS CAN APPLY FOR RACE TO THE TOP DISTRICT PROGRAM FEDERAL FUNDS

Laredo, TX—Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) announced that South Texas school districts will now have the opportunity to compete for federal funding under the Race to the Top program. Race to the Top is a United States Department of Education contest created to encourage innovation in public education. Under guidelines announced today, the Race to the Top district-level competition will offer school districts the opportunity to compete for $400 million in awards by designing plans to use individualized classroom instruction to close achievement gaps and increase the rates at which students graduate from high school prepared for college and careers. Congress approved funding for the Race to the Top district-level competition this budget year.

Mexican Businessman Indicted for Alleged Money Laundering and Bank Fraud

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A Mexican businessman from Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico, has been indicted as a result of the efforts of a multi-agency Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation, United States Attorneys Kenneth Magidson and Robert Pitman of the Southern and Western Districts of Texas, respectively, announced today. The indictment, returned late this afternoon in Brownsville, Texas, stems from a long-term investigation targeting alleged money laundering activities inside the United States.

DPS Increases Patrols for Memorial Day Weekend

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is significantly increasing trooper patrols this Memorial Day weekend in an effort to keep drivers from endangering themselves and others. DPS will increase patrols Friday, May 25, through Monday, May 28, and troopers will be looking for drunk drivers, speeders, seat belt violators and other traffic violators across the state.

Federal Prison for Three in Alien Smuggling Scheme that Resulted in the Death of Innocent Woman

CORPUS CHRISTI – Romeo Cantu and Marcos Adrian, both of Falfurrias, Texas, and Evarardo Hernandez-Salazar, a Mexican National, have been sentenced to federal prison for their involvement in an alien smuggling scheme that resulted in the death of a 70-year-old woman in her home, United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced today.

Customs and Border Protection in Hidalgo Arrest Sexual Predator

HIDALGO, TEXS— U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Hidalgo International Bridge arrested an Austin, Texas man wanted in Harris County on an outstanding warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14.

Auto Theft Agents had been working a suspected ring of vehicle burglars. After days of continued surveillance agents approached a young couple driving a black, Ford, Mustang on the 3500 block of International Blvd. Agents advised the couple of the ongoing investigation. The couple later identified as Enrique Armando Velez and Zayra Elisa Villegas consented to the agents searching their apartment. Agents and suspects went to the 4200 block of Southmost Rd. Upon arriving at location, Agents observed Alma Zamarripa exiting the apartment.

HIDALGO, TEXAS— Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge seized approximately 62.58 kilograms (138 pounds) of marijuana and arrested a Reynosa man this weekend.
