Washington, D.C.-Today Congressman Rubén Hinojosa along with other House Democrats introduced the Voter Empowerment Act, comprehensive voting rights legislation to modernize our voter registration system, ensure equal access to the ballot box for all Americans and prohibit voter caging and other deceptive practices that keep people from exercising their constitutional right to vote.

DPS Praises Announcement of Texas Anti-Gang Tactical Operations Center in Houston

AUSTIN – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steven McCraw praised Harris County District Attorney Pat Lykos, who today announced the establishment of the Texas Anti-Gang (TAG) Tactical Operations Center in Houston through a $1.7 million grant from the Criminal Justice Division of the Governor’s Office. Representing DPS at today’s announcement at the Houston High-Intensity Drug-Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Headquarters was Regional Commander Duane Steen. Lykos is the current chair of HIDTA.


Congressman Rubén Hinojosa voted today to support the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) 30-day extension in H.R. 5740. This bill offers a temporary extension that Congressman Hinojosa is in hopes will lead to a lengthier authorization in order to help homeowners.

DPS Presents Awards For Excellence

AUSTIN – The Texas Public Safety Commission and DPS Director Steven McCraw today awarded Trooper Justin Duck, of Houston, a Purple Heart for serious injuries suffered after his patrol car was struck on the side of the road in March of 2011. They also presented Unit Citations to Bastrop area troopers for their response to the Bastrop wildfire and to the DPS Fitness Unit for their efforts in improving DPS employee physical readiness.

Former La Villa Corrections Officer Indicted for Smuggling Cell Phone to Federal Inmate

McALLEN, Texas – Jorge Luis Sandoval, 21, of Pharr, Texas, has been arrested on a bribery charge for smuggling a cellular phone into the East Hildago Detention Center located in La Villa, Texas, United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced today.
